This course explores the guided reading approach and shares practical ideas to support the planning, teaching and management of guided reading at all levels. Participants will examine a guided reading lesson, learn how to form appropriate groups, and choose appropriate texts for small-group instruction. In addition, participants will receive ideas on how to assess students and create meaningful literacy activities for all students in the classroom.
Course objectives
- Explore the rationale for guided reading.
- Develop reading skills and strategies.
- Provide an overview of the reading process.
- Provide teacher tips for managing guided reading i.e., student grouping etc.
- Strategies for increasing student participation.
- Ways to foster rich conversations around texts.
